Simple Tips to Avoid SIM Recycling Risks

An inactive mobile numbers can be recycled by operators and used by others. If you still have an old number linked to your bank account, e-wallet, or email, fraudsters can receive OTPs and take over your account without your knowledge.

How Scammer Take Over Your Account

  1. A long-inactive mobile number is recycled by the operator.
  2. The number is then used by another party or scammer.
  3. The old number remains linked to your accounts, such as bank, e-wallet, or email.
  4. The scammer attempts to log in and receives the OTP through that number.
  5. The victim’s account may be taken over without their knowledge.

How to Avoid Account Takeover Scams

  1. Update your mobile number across all accounts, including bank, email, and e-wallet.
  2. Enable non-SMS two-factor authentication, such as an authenticator app or email.
  3. Contact your mobile operator immediately if you no longer have access to your old number.
